MedCity Doulas began in 2015

when two parents, 'Billie' Brittany Ann (they/them) and Amanda Steele (she/her) met at the public library while building their own communities of support. What started as shared conversations about birth, parenting, and connection quickly grew into a vision for something bigger—a doula agency that not only supports families at every stage but also makes doula work sustainable and integrated into healthcare.

Since launching in 2016, we’ve worked to expand the role of doulas beyond birth and postpartum care. Our team collaborates with Flourish Counseling, contributed to ICU research at Mayo Clinic, and developed the Hospital Doula Education Association (HDEA) to set new standards for how doulas can work within clinical settings. Through it all, our mission has remained the same: to improve healthcare through innovative social support.

Our backgrounds bring a unique perspective to this work. Amanda earned her Master’s in Public Health in 2020 (talk about a wild time), while Billie’s "first career" was in print production project management, with a degree in exhibit design and studio arts. These experiences have shaped our approach; balancing creativity, systems thinking, and public health to build a model of care that is sustainable, compassionate and effective.

From 2018 to 2024, our work extended to the ICU, where we saw how doula support can transform even the most medically complex situations. We spent time witnessing the full spectrum of life’s transitions. One 24-hour stretch took us from an overnight delivery to sitting with a dying patient the next afternoon—a moment that reinforced what we already knew: dignity, presence, and compassionate care should be the standard in every setting.

In 2022, Amanda moved to the UK but remains ever-involved, continuing to support the agency from abroad. Together, we remain committed to providing care—whether that’s guiding families through birth, postpartum, loss, critical care and end-of-life transitions or ensuring doulas have the training, recognition, and resources to thrive in this work.

At MedCity Doulas, no one does this work alone. Our team approach ensures that everyone benefits from collective knowledge and care.
